The Bodleian Libraries, in partnership with the British Journal of Photography, are commissioning three photographers to create portraits that will become part of the Bodleian Libraries’ permanent collection. This initiative aims to diversify the collection by reflecting the breadth and real-world impact of Oxford University research. The theme, "Catalysts," invites photographers to visually interpret forces that drive significant, long-term global impact. Selected works will highlight transformative moments, discoveries, or actions that initiate meaningful change. This commission seeks to showcase the profound influence of these catalysts in shaping our world.
Each selected photographer will receive a £5,000 cash grant, with additional support covering printing, framing, and artwork transportation costs. The commissioned portraits will be exhibited as part of the Bodleian Libraries’ permanent collection. Furthermore, the photographers will be interviewed by the British Journal of Photography and featured on 1854.photography, with their work shared across an extensive press list.
The commission is open to photographers at any stage of their career, provided they are 1854 Access Members. Applicants must submit 10 images showcasing their photographic style. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide a 100-word proposal detailing their approach to the commission. Finalists will be assigned five sitters or small groups to photograph between June and August 2025.
